Manual medicine is as old as the science and art of medicine itself with evidence that dates back in history and practice throughout the ages. With the preface that the body has within itself the ability to self regulate, to bring balance through homeostasis for health and disease maintenance and when in standard structural relationship, is capable of self healing.
Myotherapy, a practice of manual medicine, is defined as a distinct soft tissue discipline that incorporates operator directed assessment methods and treatment techniques to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Focused on neuro-musculoskeletal disorders and musculoskeletal pain caused by improper biomechanical functioning, myotherapy aims to restore and maintain the integrity of soft tissue structures including muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint capsule, fascial covering, joints, nerve and associated viscera.
A clinical Myotherapist can utilise a wide range of knowledge, assessment and treatment skills in the preventative, Corrective and Rehabilitative phases of musculoskeletal care, providing more complex consultation, minimising the need to refer to other related health professionals.
A manual medicine diagnosis is made using comprehensive clinical history and specific physical assessment to determine the etiology or causative factors. Musculoskeletal and biomechanical parameters are identified through Visual Observation of tissue texture change, circulation of fluids and Postural symmetry; Manual Palpation; Orthopedic, Special Orthopedic and Neurologic testing; Range of Movement abnormalities of mobility and energy.
Manual medicine techniques and treatment include soft tissue and joint mobilization, myofascial release, functional release, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, lymphatic drainage, myofascial trigger point & dry needling, Eastern Medicine cupping, TENS, injury rehabilitation, exercise prescription..
With an integrated approach, myotherapy addresses acute and chronic conditions, identifying causal factors, provides symptomatic relief at onset to progress to corrective and strengthening interventions in restorative support of neuromuscular and soft tissue integrity.
